It’s important to take an extended break once in a while, but tripping hazards and the harmful bacteria that cause tooth decay aren’t going to take any time off just because you’re on vacation. Dental emergencies are just as likely to strike when you’re away on vacation as they are at home, and not getting the help you need when you have one can lead to the same unpleasant consequences regardless of where you are. Here’s how you can be prepared to get treatment for a dental emergency if you’re on vacation.

Keep Up with Your Oral Hygiene on the Road

Proper oral hygiene is just as important on the road as it is at home, especially when you consider all the starchy and sugary fast food your average interstate traveler consumes. Make sure that you pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss, and antibacterial mouthwash for the road so that you continue to thoroughly clean your teeth at least twice a day. This will prevent harmful bacteria from accumulating in your mouth so that they can cause infections that lead to splitting toothaches.

Research Emergency Dentists at Your Destination

A quick Internet search is likely to reveal a wide selection of emergency dental providers at your vacation spot. A week or two before you leave, research your options in the area so that you can have the contact information of an emergency dentist in case you need one. You may also want to ask your dentist at home for any recommendations and request that they send your information to an emergency dentist at your vacation spot in case you have any problems.

Bring Protective Supplies

A little forethought can go a long way in helping you come to the best outcome of a dental emergency. If you’re planning on mountain biking or engaging in any other sporting adventures, consider wearing an athletic mouthguard to protect your teeth in case of falls or other potentially traumatic events. Your dentist can provide you with a customized mouthguard that offers protection superior to that of store-bought models.

You may also want to stock up on ADA-approved tooth loss treatments that can keep a tooth in savable condition for up to twenty-four hours. You can find these kits at pharmacies.

Everybody loves a vacation, but nobody loves dental emergencies. Being prepared for a dental crisis before you leave for your summer trip can give you peace of mind and help preserve your oral health.
